Cúl na Cruaiche

Cúl na Cruaiche

‘S gur mise ‘ghabhfadh an ceol di san fhómhar má b’fhada an oích’ ( Wasn’t it me who could play a tune for her in the autumn if the night was long)

– From the song “Cúl na Cruaiche”

The song Cúl na Cruaiche is exclusively a Ranafast (Rann na Feirste) song. I recorded it on my first album “Slán agus Beannacht” in 1988 (vinyl) and released it on CD  1990.  I included it in a recent compilation album called “A Chraoibhín Aoibinn Álainn Ó” (2019). The song is full of beautiful images, many related to the natural world. Cúl na Cruaiche  was the bases of a story  I wrote which won a major prize in Oireachtas na Gaeilge 2020.

Description

Oíche go Maidin (Dusk Till Dawn), Duke Gallery, Dublin, Sept – Oct  1993

Traditional Gaelic songs (both Irish and Scottish) I discovered  are full of beautiful lines describing simple, diminutive, colourful aspects of the Gaeltacht environment. They express a quiet, lonely beauty seen and felt. My paintings on this theme endeavour to celebrate this landscape.
