Description
The William Doos seem to have divided themselves between locations close to both Malin Town and Culdaff Town. This would appear to be a deliberate ploy to protect their territory on all possible fronts.
Gartell McShane Boy O’Doherty was in residence in Dunowen’s striking promontory fort, directly to the north of Culdaff, in the year 1601, but there are other possible locations for O’Doherty families in Ourt and Redford. Unfortunately, information on the latter two is insufficient.
The owen in the fort name Dunowen is clearly a reference to a much earlier Eoghan, perhaps one who lived a long time before the coming of the O’Dohertys.
(Genealogical records of the 1600s suggest that the O’Doherty’s of Inch occupied a castle in the Culdaff area, having vacated their castle on Inch and travelled by boat into Bunagee. Dunowen is a likely location, but also the recently (2018) researched Dún na gCrann in the townland of Dunross where the Young estate is today. Dunowen therefor may not have been the residence of the William Doos who now seen identifiable as the O’Doherty’s of Glenagivney.)
